Lake Tekapo/Takapō & the Mackenzie Region
Lake Tekapo is renowned for its spectacular night sky, stunning alpine scenery, and unbeatable climate! In fact, Tekapo and the Mackenzie region are part of the world-famous Aoraki Mackenzie International Dark Sky Reserve, ensuring its incredibly dark skies are preserved for future generations.
Located high in the centre of the South Island of New Zealand, this alpine lake and settlement lies in the heart of the stunning Mackenzie District, surrounded by a vast basin of golden tussock grass. Elevated at 710 metres (2,300 feet) above sea level, finely ground rock in the melted glacial waters gives Lake Tekapo a beautiful turquoise colour.
History of the Region
The area's original Māori name is Takapō, meaning "to leave in haste at night," which reflects its historic role as a vital tribal food gathering area. The broader region gained its name from James McKenzie, the legendary Scottish sheep rustler captured here in 1855, whose exploits quickly became local legend. His faithful sheep dog ‘Friday’ is immortalised in a lakefront monument.
Protected by the towering Southern Alps to the west and the Two Thumb Range to the east, Lake Tekapo is blessed with a unique, stable climate. This high alpine location enjoys some of New Zealand’s highest sunshine hours and lowest wind speeds, with notably low rainfall. This creates the perfect conditions for the village, nestled beside the incredible turquoise glacial lake, to be surrounded by golden tussock and snow-capped peaks all year round.
